If you buy an integrated unit (GPS and display) you're usually locked into that vendor for both maps and software. * everyone idea of "adventure riding" is different of courseġ. You can do something simlar with the Garmin and GPS trackmaker etc if you were so inclined. I run this map as the background map when I am in areas not covered by the GPS mapping, it is loaded off the SD card in the Magellan. This can be time consuming but I have built up a decent database of track and trails over the years, along with tracks my mates have travelled and recorded as well as some I have simpily digitised off the paper based maps. In the real rough stuff on my thumper (Husky 610) I use my Magellan Meridian exclusively but construct my own basemaps using the Magellan MobileMapperOffice Software and backload these into the GPS. and provides me with superb mapping and the ability to do my own route planning on the GPS while I have a break on the side of the trail. I do two things to overcome this, using raster based mapping software (Oziexplorer) I use the equivalent of your forestry maps, scanned into a PDA and connected to the GPS, this is fine for the BMW 1150 GS Adv. I prefer the road less travelled, these are mostly not on the GPS and even if they are, if you use routing it will typically avoid the very roads you want to take. Click to expand. This is why for "adventure riding*" IMO a mapping GPS is virtually useless.
